A DOG owner has called for people to pick up their litter after his flat coat retriever’s leg was cut ‘down to the bone’ on some glass.

On Sunday, April 21, Shaun Greaves, from Bournemouth, took his dog for a walk at West Parley, a place known as ‘the waterfall.’

While swimming in the water, his beloved dog Hattie ‘let out a yelp’.

She came out of the pond, and Shaun said she doubled over.

Shaun said: “We’ve taken Hattie to this particular spot loads and loads of times, and many dogs go there to swim.

“When she came out of the water, we noticed a really big cut. It was around six to seven inches long and had a big flap.

“It was a pretty awful thing to happen.”

Shaun and his wife made a makeshift bandage for Hattie while they waited to get her safely in the car, which ‘couldn’t have been further away.’

After what happened to his dog, Shaun recommended dog walkers bring a small first aid kid with them on walks in case similar situations reoccur

He said: “It’s so thoughtless to leave bits of glass in public places.

“They’re probably not doing it maliciously, but they need to be aware that these are places where lots of people walk their dogs and ride their horses.

“I am just asking people to be mindful that children and animals go in the water, so take your glass home with you.”

Hattie was lucky the cut missed her arteries, and therefore, they were able to get her to an emergency vet for treatment for her injuries.

She was brought to Lynwood out-of-hours vets in Wimborne and was anaesthetised for 45 minutes while the vets operated to save her leg.

Shaun said: “Just walking into the vet cost £300, and the whole procedure was just under £2000.

“But that doesn’t stop there because we have to take her back to get the dressing taken off.”

Hattie is a fairly young dog at just two years old, so Shaun is fairly optimistic she will make a full recovery.

Shaun said: “She is a very energetic dog, so it’s frustrating for her to just be doing lead walks.

“I think because she is young, she will bounce back fairly quickly."
