As all foodies will know, Dorset is a veritable hub for exceptional local produce.

Now one new company is determined to put the county on the map - both nationwide and internationally - when it comes to chutney, honey, cheese, bread and wines.

Poole-based Hampers Bizarre has a range of luxury hampers showcasing Dorset's finest products, which can be tailored to suit any budget, taste or dietary requirement.

The collections feature items such as Thomas Fudge mini Dorset Florentines; Blue Vinny cheese, Dorset Knob bread rolls from Moores; Real Ale Chutney by From Dorset With Love and wines from the Melbury Estate Vineyard.

Other products, including infused oils, chocolate brownies and spice bags with recipes, have been created especially by the Hampers Bizarre team.

Local event organiser Jane Jones set up the business with her freelance head chef partner Mark Stout, who has a 2 AA rosette background and has come up with his own recipes for the collections, and colleagues Matt Wisdom and Craig Bebby.

"It started because I'm in events," explains Jane.

"I've really had a horrific year because I lost a lot of money and I had to dust myself down and decide what I'm going to do. I had been thinking about hampers for a long time and thought 'why don't we go down the route of luxury hampers, but Dorset all the way?'

"It's my absolute passion, because I was born here - the Sorted in Dorset food and drink festival was my baby that failed.

"We always, always, always want to showcase small businesses in Dorset, but we will be doing more and more stuff ourselves as well. Mark is doing the oils and making some things like the home-made chocolate brownies - some people bought the hampers just because of that."

Jane had a number of local companies in mind that she approached to provide produce for the hampers, but is thrilled to also be discovering more suppliers as she sources the items.

"Dorset With Love we are using quite a bit of," she says, "but I was having trouble sourcing some things and my partner Mark went to a farm shop - Vines Close Farm in Sturminster Marshall - and was able to get all the things I couldn't find."

The team came up with two Christmas hampers last month - The Sherborne, priced £100, and The Melbury, at £90, and even put together Doggie and Kitty versions - but will now be focusing on more generic collections, as well as those for specific events such as Valentine's Day, in the new year.

They are also happy to make up bespoke gifts.

"We are happy to do bespoke, but it does depend what we can source, "explains Jane.

"We are very conscious of different food allergies and we will make a bespoke hamper for vegans.

"We are also trying to go down the route of sustainable where possible, which is why we are using good quality hampers that can be re-used for other things."

Despite getting off the ground only recently, Jane is thrilled there has been a flurry of interest in the hampers. Some 25 have already been sent to various companies abroad, including one as far as Israel.

Not content with just the hampers, the team have also set up another arm to the business - floral styling service Beautifully Bizarre.

"I rent out a room in my office to Matt and Craig, who are ex-Laura Ashley," Jane explains.

"Matt was at Laura Ashley for 20-odd years and had 51 stores under him - he was in charge of theming the windows. Craig came on board a bit later and was his assistant.

"I'm very creative and I saw how talented they were in the decoration side of things - I thought we should combine the decorations and hampers."

The team has recently been focusing on Christmas displays - decorating private homes as well as local businesses such as Poole Audi and Poole Volvo - but Jane is keen to offer styling all year round for special occasions and events.

"Apart from our opulent feathered wreaths and garlands, I’ve been walking outside in the great British weather and Dorset countryside foraging for anything interesting and unusual to add to our products," she says.

"We were proud to provide complete exterior decorations for some very special clients at Christmas as well as shop window displays. Now with Christmas behind us we are preparing for our Valentine, Mother’s Day and Easter hampers which will include some very interesting delicacies from muslin lavender bags and body oils through to one to one cookery coaching with Mark."
