Are you looking for that elusive piece of art for your home? That unique piece that you know would look perfect on the wall of your bedroom or lounge?

If so, Dorset Art Market, coming to The Avenue Stadium, Dorchester on Saturday, June 29, between 10am and 2pm, might be the place for you.

The first Dorset Art Market was held at the same venue on Easter Saturday. It brought together talented artists from across Dorset, selling originals, prints and handmade items, ranging from wall art, to gift cards and printed clothing and cushions to ceramics.

The market also featured talented local young musicians busking – performances included the guitar, violin, accordion and vocals – which added a convivial atmosphere to the day.

Louise Stewart, one of the organisers of the market, said more than 400 people attended the first market.

She said: “We want to make it a nice relaxed place to come. We hope we will continue to get a really positive response from it because things like Dorset Art Weeks, Purbeck Art Week and open art events have highlighted the work of artists to the people visiting these type of events – there’s a real demand out there.

“We had a great response to the first one and a real range of ages there and a range of artists who gave us a lot of positive feedback.

We were really pleased with how it went,” said Louise. Artist Maree, of Mooni Gooni Glass, based in Charminster, said she feels lucky to be part of the art market.

She said: “I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to take part in the art market. It is so important to promote and support the huge variety of highly talented artists we have right on our own doorstep here in Dorset, and the market provides us with an excitingway to do this.”

The market uses both indoor and outdoor space – the function room inside the stadium and the space outside. The next market will feature a different combination of artists. Indoor spaces are already fully booked and there will be more outside stalls featuring glasswork, photography, wood art and paintings.

It will feature artists including Sue Jones of Lymelight Glass Studio, a stained glass specialist from Lyme Regis; Cut the Rut who create vintage inspired art and children’s craft activity packs using recycled materials; Cathy Veale, a regular exhibitor at the Mall Galleries in London with the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, whose watercolours are inspired by the Dorset Coast; and Dorchester-based Indian ink specialist Jessamy Keily of Jinks Art, who creates images inspired by nature, wildlife and marine life.

Louise said: “The range of artists that is coming is amazing, from abstract work and print work to more traditional work. There’s something for everybody, we’ve been so lucky with the artists we’ve got because all their work is unique. There’s a real cross-section of work, and the market has art for sale for art lovers with any kind of budget to spend,”

Louise said. “From looking around the site myself I could see work you can buy for a couple of pounds, really good quality prints for £30 or £40 and original large paintings for about £100 and £150. The artists want their work to be affordable. Galleries can be fantastic for highlighting the work of artists but they can be too expensive for a lot of people.

“One of the artists we have is Lily Martin, who produces really beautiful abstract art, her work is reasonably priced and she produces these really beautiful large pieces.”

The art market, the first of its kind to be held in this area, has been inspired by similar markets in London, Bristol and Bournemouth.

Louise said: “There was an excellent range of work and styles on show and it was lovely to meet the artists. Dorset is home to some very talented people creating beautiful work.”

The market also helps artists to meet other artists and gain confidence when it comes to selling, Louise says.

“Some of the artists commented at the last market that there aren't many events that bring them together as artists. It’s lovely for them to meet other artists and find a new audience. Some are starting to sell their work for the first time which can be difficult, so it’s nice for them to build a network.”
